Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
