Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
