Close to 25,000 Lost Electricity in Queensland and Victorian Regions Following Intense Weather Systems

Nearly twenty-five thousand households in southeastern Queensland woke up experiencing outages on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms impacted the state, bringing wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Broad Impact

Homeowners reported large ice chunks reaching sizes of 7cm in some areas. Weather authorities verified that multiple regions across Queensland had been impacted by substantial ice precipitation.

Emergency crews were attempting to repair power throughout the impacted areas, with approximately seventy teams deployed to handle the extensive power failures.

Victoria's Weather Woes

Meanwhile, nearly 1,000 residents in the southern state also experienced electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area saw its wettest day in a year and a half.

Emergency response teams received over five hundred requests for assistance across the region, mainly for property damage but also for fallen timber and inundation.

• Werribee - experienced considerable storm damage
• Hoppers Crossing area - various rescue reports
• Wyndham - nearly 180 calls for assistance

During the peak on Sunday, in excess of 28k energy customers in the state were lacking electricity.

Weather Forecast

Damp conditions were forecast to persist along much of Queensland's east this next several days as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the coastal areas.

The following day was predicted as the most rainy day, with ongoing storm activity predicted across multiple regions of both states.

Safety Concern

Public health experts warned that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the countryside regions, specifically given the existing atmospheric conditions.
